Living documents: reflection that grows with GenAI learning

Courses need to evolve, particularly when the subject is changing rapidly, like GenAI. But updating content is only part of the job. We also keep an eye on emerging research and thinking about how people learn.

A recent study by Dang et al. supported our use of living documents in our GenAI foundation courses. Their research found that reflection helped students question their use of AI, use it more strategically and consider what they had actually learned.

For us, this highlights the importance of giving participants somewhere to capture and reflect on their learning throughout the course, rather than simply at the end.

That's where our living document comes in. It gives each participant a consistent place to capture learning, ideas, questions, reflections, experiments and actions as they progress. It's not simply a place to store notes.

As the document grows alongside them, it gradually becomes something more valuable: a personalised roadmap showing where they are now in their GenAI journey, where they want to go, and how they might get there.
